Raúl Pérez wordt niet alleen gezien als een van de grootste wijnmakers van Spanje, maar ook als pionier van de noordwestelijke streek Bierzo. Geboren en getogen in Valtuille de Abajo, is hij een van de experts op het gebied van het unieke Bierzo-terroir. Zijn La Vizcaína-reeks is een hommage aan de crus rondom Valtuille.

El Rapolao is een plot van anderhalve hectare, gelegen op 550 meter hoogte. Het oudste deel van de wijngaard stamt uit 1920, het nieuwere deel uit 1980. De mencia, bastardo en garnacha tintorera staan aangeplant op ijzerrijke kleibodems. Dankzij de noordelijke expositie en hogere ligging is de wijngaard relatief koel en rijpen de druiven langzaam.

Eenmaal geoogst en ontsteeld, vergist Raúl de druiven en volgt er een schilinweking van 30 dagen. Na de persing rijpt de menciablend een jaar in gebruikte houten vaten. De wijn wordt ongefilterd en ongeklaard gebotteld, om zoveel mogelijk van het karakter van de wijn te behouden.

El Rapolao is een adembenemende, pure en ongepolijste Bierzo die z’n gelijke niet kent. Wild rood en zwart fruit, peperige en mineralige tonen, een krachtige structuur en een immense verfijning. Dat dit de favoriete La Vizcaína van The Wine Advocate-journalist Luis Gutiérrez is, begrijpen we maar al te goed!

Proefnotitie

Helderrood van kleur; complex aroma met rijpe, kruidige tonen, leer en vuursteen. De smaakstructuur zet vol en krachtig in ontwikkelt een lange afdronk met rijpe tannine en veel aromatische lengte.

Drinken bij

Complexe wijn, uitstekend bij kruidige en verfijnde schotels uit de oven.

Houdbaarheid

Op dronk vanaf 3 à 4 jaar na de oogst; gemakkelijk 8 tot 10 jaar houdbaar.

The 2023 La Vizcaína Las Gundiñas has a more herbaceous nose, from old vines that might have 5% of white grapes. It's a wet year in a wet place, a vineyard that retains very well the water in drier years. It has a different expression that seems to transcend the place and vintage (Raúl Pérez compared it with the 2013), and it's more aromatic. I still think this plot behaves better in drier years...
